Reconstruir los cambios climáticos más allá del siglo pasado es esencial para: - caracterizar la variabilidad natural del clima, fuera del periodo afectado por la actividad humana - entender la respuesta del sistema Tierra a los forzamientos externos y las perturbaciones internas (por ejemplo, el vulcanismo) - para identificar todos los procesos relacionados con el cambio climático , algunas de las cuales implican constantes de tiempo largos (por ejemplo, la circulación oceánica a gran escala) Los estudios paleoclimáticos amplían nuestro campo de observación para entender mejor la magnitud de los fenómenos extremos, y cómo son influenciados por el cambio del clima medio y de la variabilidad climática en diferentes escalas de tiempo

Proyectos de investigación ESCARSEL Evolution Séculaire du Climat dans les régions circum-Atlantiques et Réponse de Systèmes Eco-Lacustres se place dans le contexte des changements climatiques du dernier millénaire et du siècle futur. Le dernier millénaire a connu au moins une période chaude (au Moyen-Age) et une période froide (le petit âge glaciaire).
