TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT FOR ENDEMIC INFECTIOUS DISEASES OF AMAZONIA This competing renewal application proposes international training and research capacity building in globally important infectious diseases focused at Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Lima, Peru, with important research capacity development focused at the Iquitos public university, Universidad de la Amazonia Peruana. Developing the research capacity to study tropical diseases in the endemic setting, leveraged by advanced capabilities in Lima and key field- and laboratory-based capacities Mayo 2016 Febrero 2021 JOSEPH MICHAEL VINETZ -
ADDRESSING THE GLOBAL BURDEN OF LEPTOSPIROSIS IN TWO ENDEMIC COUNTRIES Leptospirosis is a globally important infectious disease-affecting people globally. The goal of this project is to develop and validate diagnostic tests that can be used worldwide, independent of the predominant regional leptospiral serovars. The impact of this project is broad, and has the ultimate goal of determining the true global burden of disease for leptospirosis. Setiembre 2015 Febrero 2020 JOSEPH MICHAEL VINETZ -
Peruvian/Brazilian Amazon Center of Excellence in Malaria The goals of this multi-project grant are to integrate clinical, epidemiological, entomological features of malaria towards the development of the biological basis of malaria control in the Amazon region. Setiembre 2010 JOSEPH VINETZ Ciencias Médicas y de la Salud
Development and Testing of Human Brucellosis Diagnostics in an Endemic Country The goals of this project were to 1) Develop a well-defined clinical specimen bank for validating new assays to diagnose acute brucellosis by studying human populations in a Brucella melitensis-endemic country; and 2) Validate new lateral flow assays to optimize the rapidity and accuracy of brucellosis, including the development of new antibody and antigen detection assays. Agosto 2007 Julio 2012 JOSEPH MICHAEL VINETZ - Ciencias Médicas y de la Salud
LEPTOSPIROSIS TRANSMISSION IN THE PERUVIAN AMAZON e major hypothesis underlying this project is that the transmission of leptospirosis to humans is substantially increased by both short and long- term anthropogenic influences on the environment. Two specific hypotheses will be tested: 1) Deforestation with resulting changes in land use (land cultivation, fish farming) that bring humans into closer contact with local mammalian fauna and increases in the amounts of surface waters, soil wetness, and changes in soil pH due to short-term weather flu Junio 2002 Mayo 2007 JOSEPH MICHAEL VINETZ - Ciencias Médicas y de la Salud
Predicting Risk of Human Leptospirosis by Environmental Surveillance This multidisciplinary project will provide key data to drive the development of public health policies aimed at reducing the human risk of leptospirosis. The study results will be globally applicable to other regions affected by leptospirosis, and have the potential to be generalizable to other infectious diseases that have key eco/epidemiological contexts, such as those caused by enteric pathogens. For the first time, the natural history and clinical impact of leptospirosis in a highly endemic Setiembre 2013 JOSEPH MICHAEL VINETZ - Ciencias Médicas y de la Salud
