LEON VELARDE SERVETTO FABIOLA MARIA

Es bióloga y doctora en Ciencias (Fisiología) por la Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (UPCH). Se desempeñó como profesora principal del Departamento de Ciencias Biológicas y Fisiológicas de la Facultad de Ciencias de la UPCH desde el año 1981. Entre 1995, y en el 2002 fue Investigadora Asociada en la Universidad de Paris XIII. También ha sido Fellow de Queen’s College de la Universidad de Oxford, donde participó en proyectos de investigación en el Laboratorio de Fisiología de la Respiración. Tiene una extensa producción científica en fisiología de adaptación a la altura con más de 170 títulos en revistas internacionales indexadas, así como varios libros y artículos de su especialidad. Es coautora de dos Premios Hipólito Unanue a la mejor edición científica peruana en Medicina y Fisiología: Desadaptación a la Vida en las Grandes Alturas (1995) y El Reto Fisiológico de Vivir en los Andes (2004). También es coautora de Salud y Minería: El Riesgo del Mal de Montaña Crónico entre Mineros de Cerro de Pasco (1990). Fue Rectora de la Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia entre mayo del 2008 a junio del 2017, durante dos periodos, por elección de la Asamblea Universitaria, y Vicerrectora de Investigación de la misma universidad, entre abril del 2004 y abril del 2008. Es Académico de Número de la Academia Nacional de Ciencias y miembro del Colegio de Biólogos del Perú, así como de la Academia Latinoamericana de Ciencias, de la American Physiological Society (Sociedad Americana de Fisiología) y de la International Society for Mountain Medicine (Sociedad Internacional de Medicina de Montaña). En julio de 2017 fue designada presidenta del Consejo Nacional de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación Tecnológica (Concytec), cargo que ostenta hasta la fecha.
